Sewing Tip: Pressing Silk Organza
Organza silk is often used as underlining for delicate blouses and dresses. Because it is difficult to control, expensive and it's too sheer, most designers never thought of using it as press cloth.
Press cloth helps avoid shine that appears from over-pressing or pressing directly on the fashion fabric. One advantage of using silk organza press cloth that is 100% silk and not polyester, is that it is sheer and it withstands heat.
Most experts suggest using organza press cloth with silks and lace, because it protects delicate fabrics from overpressing and because its sheerness makes it convenient to control layers underneath.
Make Yourself A Press Cloth | Did You Make That?
The word on the sewing street is that you should save an offcut of silk organza to use as a press cloth. Silk organza is extremely strong but fluid, which means it can stand high temperatures and drape nicely over whatever ...

Silk Organza Fabrics As Underlining
Silk Organza is one of the best fabrics to use as underlining.
Underlining vs. lining
Lining and underlining a garment are two different procedures, and depending on their purpose, one or both can be used in a single piece of clothing. Usually cut from a slippery fabric, lining is attached only at the garment's waistband or neck, and sometimes its hem -- otherwise, it hangs free in the garment. It's generally used to give a finished look to the inside of the garment, prevent seams from raveling, reduce wrinkling, help conceal some figure faults, and make a garment easier to slip on and off.
Underlining, on the other hand, is cut from the same pattern pieces as the fashion fabric and is attached before construction begins. Then, as the garment is constructed, the underlining and fashion fabric are handled as a single unit.
Understanding Underlining - Threads
Most often, underlining is cut from fine cotton batiste, light- to medium-weight cotton broadcloth, or silk organza. But a variety of other materials can also be used.

Sewing Silk Charmeuse
Yesterday, we have discussed on how to sew your silk charmeuse. Since it is an expensive material, you take it slowly or run the risk and buy another fabric. As a continuation of yesterday's post, on How to Sew Silk Charmeuse, here are other tips on how to handle this luxury fabric.
Controlling the fabric
Charmeuse can be slippery. To control the personality of the fabric, lay it flat over a layer of tissue paper to cut out your pattern. Use weights or silk pins, and cut through the paper and the fabric at the same time.
Ways to use your charmeuse
Blouses, dresses, evening wear, bridal wear, skirts, tops, tees, scarves, and upscale lingerie.
Sewing patterns and styles
You can use the following as creative ways to sew your fabric. However make sure you work first on a scrap before working on a full garment.
1. Pintucks
2. Lace applications
3. Beading
4. Multiple topstitching
5. Bias cuts
6. Ruffles
7. Ruching

How to sew silk charmeuse
Silk charmeuse, being a luxury fabric, smooth and soft, can be one of the hardest fabrics to sew. It's expensive and it is a must that you know how to handle such fabric. Charmeuse is medium weight, woven silk with a lustrous appearance.
Here is a sewing guide on how to do silk charmeuse, which I grabbed while having my morning cup of coffee.
Pre-treatment:
Handwash in cool water with a drop of baby shampoo, rinse several times, lay flat to dry. Dryclean if preferred.
Needles and thread:
Use the smallest needle you can see to thread like a size 10 quilter’s needle. Silk thread is a luxurious option for construction; if you cannot find silk thread, use cotton embroidery thread. Cotton embroidery thread is fine in texture, but strong enough to handle construction of this beautiful fabric.
Interfacing:
If you prefer a fusible, use the lightest weight you can find. Look for Silkweight, Touch of Gold, or other super-fine fusibles. By far the best interfacing for charmeuse is silk. Use silk organza for those areas that need a bit of crispness. Use a layer of self-fabric for those areas that need interfacing but need to retain a soft hand.
Seams, seam finishes, and hems:
Shorten your stitch length slightly for construction; if you normally use a 2.5 length, shorten to 2.0. For seams on the bias, use a zigzag stitch (2.0 length, 1.5 width) to allow the fabric to maintain the stretch of the bias. Seams will require finishing, as charmeuse ravels. The best solution is to use a French seam for construction. Stitch the first seam with wrong sides together at 3/8”. Trim to a scant ¼”, press the seam open, then turn right sides together. Stitch the second pass of the seam ¼” from the fold of the original seam. This enclosed seam is elegant, clean, and classic. If you prefer to use a machine stitched finish, keep it light. Use a 2 thread overlock seam on the serger, or trim the seam very closely and zigzag over the edges to finish. Hems are best done by machine, and should be as narrow as possible.

Silk Charmeuse for a Structured Shirt
Most people referred to silk charmeuse as the best fabric for gowns and lingerie because of its smooth texture and good drape. But a good tailor can make anything out of it.
Here is a sexy military silk charmeuse shirt, a stretch silk charmeuse shirt flaunts a blousy fit that pairs perfecty with jeggings or skinny cords. With stand collar and split neck and Henley placket has buttons that start at the bust, it gives you the structured bearing yet sexy. Adding chest patch pockets feature a trio of pleats and long sleeves sport a button and tab for a stylish roll sleeve with straight back yoke and center box pleat.
Button cuffs. Shirttail hem. 93% silk, 7% spandex. This shirt totally disagree that only lingerie fits a silk charmeuse.
